On the 5th of November 1605, Guy Fawkes, a Catholic rebel, with some conspirators, planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament in Britain and kill the Protestant King James I with gunpowder which had been placed in the cellars. This became known as The Gunpowder Plot. Guy Fawkes was arrested, tortured and hanged after revealing the names of all the other conspirators.
Since then this day has been celebrated all over England with fireworks and bonfires. Children make a Guy withn old clothes, newspapers, straw and a mask. Then they take it around the streets asking for money to buy fireworks, saying: "A penny for the Guy".
